Australian Manuka Honey Association (AMHA) announced mark of quality to the Australian Manuka honey, to increase confidence when consumed by customers.
The Criteria for Defining Australian Manuka honey require that:
- Methylglyoxal (MGO), for Potency
- Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) for ShelfLife
- Leptosperin for Authenticity (marker)
are all present in the honey, with the testing required to be conducted by an independent analytical laboratory.
- To bear the ‘Authorised’ mark, products must be tested to contain at least:
- MGO ≥ 30 mg/kg (or ppm)
- DHA≥ 60 mg/kg (or ppm)
- Leptosperin ≥ 100 mg/kg (or ppm)
- To bear the ‘Authentic’ mark, products must be tested to contain at least:
- MGO ≥ 85 mg/kg (or ppm)
- DHA≥ 170 mg/kg (or ppm)
- Leptosperin ≥ 200 mg/kg (or ppm)
